The Labels Weight
The Labels Weight is the dressed up output of the internal algorithm we're using on Labels.io to rank professionals when all other things are relatively equal (e.g. when there are several profiles matching a very specific search query). The algorithm attempts to determine your online social authority by measuring the impact of your relevant contributions to the social web (relevant meaning that if you're a lawyer and you keep tweeting or blogging about your car, your Labels Weight won't go any higher)

 How it works

As soon as you fill in your Labels.io profile we compile it into a series of metadata elements (we call them "labels") that act as the backbone of your professional identity. The labels can be anything from employers defined on your profile to semantic matches of keywords in your personal pitch (e.g. if you define yourself as an "RoR" or "Rails" developer, we'll add "Ruby on Rails" to your set of labels)

When you link your Twitter account to your Labels.io profile the Labels Weight algorithm kicks in: it starts by gathering information from several sources (details below) and then matches it against your labels to determine its relevance to your professional identity. The relevant content is then ranked according to its importance, fed into several variables and transformed into a numerical score between 0 and 100. The whole process is repeated a few times a month to keep your score up to date.

The algorithm is designed to be extremely adaptive, and scalable according to your labels (e.g. there are different variables involved for a photographer than for a C# programmer) yet there are a few sources we're constantly polling for information: your Labels.io profile's internal metrics, your Twitter activity, your Facebook activity and finally, metrics of your personal blog or portfolio, as long as you link to them from your profile and, of course, as long as there's a way to prove they actually belong to you (we usually do that by asking you to login via the API of the source)

     Tips

On Labels.io we acknowledge that your online presence, whether that means your Facebook activity or your blog posts, has a major impact on your professional life, especially (yet not solely) if you're in the hunt for new opportunities. The moral of the Labels Weight algorithm is that you need to achieve a balance between your personal and professional online presence: professional networking is not necessarily about the number of your LinkedIn connections or Twitter followers but about the impact you have on them.

Save for the obvious, that is, to have an active online professional life (read, have opinions and engage in conversations), there are a few other things you can do to increase your Labels Weight:

1. Add all the relevant sources to your Labels.io profile (e.g. your Twitter and Facebook accounts, Tumblr blog, Quora profile etc) Even if we're not using all of these right now, we will be using most of them in the near future so why not be a step ahead?

2. Share quality content, relevant to your professional identity.

3. If you've just created your Labels.io account, your Labels Weight will be a bit lower than usual because of the lack of visitors to your profile. As long as you promote your profile across the web (e.g. link to it, tweet about it or add it in your e-mail signature) you will make up for that in no time.

 Feedback

The revamped Labels Weight is for now an experimental feature so we've decided to remove it temporarily from the search ranking algorithm until we're fairly sure it's completely bug free. If you've uncovered any bugs in it give us a hand and tell us about it by dropping a line at
